How to Make Homemade Snow Globes

Posted by admin on May 1, 2009

First, you’ll need to gather your supplies: a glass jar and lid, distilled water (you can boil tap water and wait for it to cool off), glycerin (available in a local drugstore), glitter, waterproof sealant (aquarium sealant, epoxy, or outdoor chalking), a small waterproof figurine, statuette, or ornament that will fit inside the jar, a bottle cap, another jar lid or block of wood, a little paint, and a little bit of glue.

You’re going to want your figurine or ornament to be in the center of your snow globe. As this is the centerpiece of the project, start with a little planning. Place the lid of your glass jar with its top down and put the bottle cap on top of it. Set your figurine on top of your bottle cap, and then place the glass jar over it. If your statuette is in the center, perfect. If it’s too high, take out your bottle cap and either try a different one or go without it. If it’s too low, stack bottle caps until your ornament is where you want it. When everything is ready, paint your bottle cap, and then adhere it to the glass jar’s lid. Glue your ornament to the base with your waterproof sealant and wait for everything to dry. If you paint your bottle cap, you’ll want to brush a layer of sealant over it so the paint doesn’t bleed when wet.

While your base is drying, it’s time to test the rate of snowfall. Take your glass jar and fill it with your boiled or distilled water. Add a teaspoon of glitter and shake. Add more glitter as needed, until you have the blizzard or light flurries that you’re looking for. If the glitter falls too quickly, add a few drops of glycerin. This will slow down the movement. Oil can be used instead of glycerin and water because it is thicker; however, it does not provide the best viewing consistency.

When everything is ready, take your lid with the glued statuette and ***** it onto your water-and-glitter-filled jar. Some water will be displaced, so do this over a sink. Wipe your jar dry and shake for a sneak preview of your homemade snow globe. The job’s just about done.

Use your waterproof sealant to glue the lid in place and to ensure there are no leaks. Then take your other lid or wooden block and use this as a stand. Paint it if you like, and then glue your snow globe onto it. If you paint your stand, you might want to paint the lid of your snow globe the same or a complementary color. When the paint is dry, add any decorations that you want to the outside, and you are done. Shake to your heart’s content.

Great Gift Basket Ideas

Posted by admin on May 1, 2009

Food gift baskets are popular gifts for birthdays, the holidays, or for any special occasion. Unfortunately, prepackaged gift baskets can be expensive! They also can be wasteful, as what are the odds that the recipient will like all the foods in the basket? So why not be creative and make your own custom food gift basket? You can fill it up with foods the recipient will appreciate, and you can control the cost. You also can include homemade treats, and what’s more personal than that?

When making a gift basket, it’s a good idea to include foods that are nonperishable, or at least foods that don’t go bad quickly. Choose food containers that are attractive and look nice together. Try to avoid foods that are too bulky. And most important, choose foods the recipient likes!

Here are some ideas for homemade food gift baskets, gourmet food gift baskets, healthy food gift baskets, and convenience food gift baskets. Choose one of these themes, or mix and match!

1)     Coffee or tea gift baskets are great ideas – they work well for the Holidays and for birthdays and special occasions.  Plus they are so easy to accessorize and add little nuggets of joy. Start with 3 or 4 different types of gourmet coffee – using a good assortment. Mix heavy with dark and light and even throw in coffee from different regions. A good variety is always well received. Then add some nice accessories like coffee mugs and travel accessories. Finally add some biscuits or crackers and even some flavored creamers if you like. Chocolates, Nuts and candies add a wonderful final touch.

2) Homemade food gift baskets are great for the holidays, college exam week, or anytime a little comfort food is needed. Dress up a gift basket of prepared foods with a few homemade items for a personal touch. Some ideas for homemade gift basket treats:

·         Cookies

·         Quick breads

·         Mini muffins

·         Fruitcake

·         Rice Krispie treats

·         Hand dipped chocolate covered fruits and cookies

·         Sealed jars of jam or jelly

2) Gourmet food gift baskets make great housewarming or holiday gifts. They’re great for foodies who love to cook, or for anyone who could use a few gourmet meals. Gourmet condiments often are available in small containers, so you can fill a basket with a variety of gourmet treats. Some ideas:

·         Olive oil

·         Balsamic vinegar

·         Chutney

·         Gourmet mustard or similar jarred condiments

·         High quality chocolate bars, truffles, and other gourmet chocolates

·         Marzipan candy

·         Gourmet coffee or tea

·         Gourmet cocoa for hot chocolate

·         High quality, expensive spices, like saffron

·         Cheese (but check the shelf life)

3) Healthy food gift baskets. These will make a welcome change of pace during the holidays, when everyone’s bombarded by cookies and candies. For a good balance, add some of these healthy treats into other gift baskets as well. Some ideas:

·         Fruit with a long shelf life (apples, oranges, pears, etc.)

·         Dried fruit, nuts, and trail mix

·         Herbal tea or green tea

·         Organic cookies, crackers, or similar healthy snack foods

Gifts From the Kitchen

Posted by admin on May 1, 2009

Homemade gifts from the kitchen make wonderful gifts for teachers or coworkers as well as for friends and family.  These gifts can be very personal; a nice way to acknowledge those who touch our lives in special ways.  What are the recipients favorite treats?  Maybe he or she is under the weather.  Whatever the reason for the gift, try to make it special.

Gift In A Mug

This gift is really two gifts in one; the mug to use later and the edible gift in the mug.  There are two different ways to make mug gifts.  One way is by giving a mug filled with ingredients to make a cup of soup or a sweet treat.  The second way is to bake a sweet treat inside the mug.

Tips:

Use only mugs that are food safe, as well as safe for microwave and oven use.

Choose mugs that will hold at least 12 ounces and have straight sides.

Wrap your finished mug gift in clear wrap or small cello bags, tie with raffia or narrow ribbon, and add a gift tag that indicates the contents of the mug.

Gifts In A Jar

There are many options for making gifts in a jar; cookies, scones, muffins, quick breads, and soups to name a few.

Tips:

Choose jars with a wide mouth, airtight lids, and are clean and dry.

Check the recipe for the jar size needed.

Fine ingredients, such as granulated sugar and flour, are best layered in the bottom.  Level and tightly pack each layer.

Cover the top of the filled jar with a 8″ to 10″ circle of fabric.  Tie this fabric with curly ribbon, raffia, or twine.  Include a gift tag and recipe directions.

Gift In A Basket

A basket makes a wonderful gift container for many food gifts.  When you don’t have time to put together a homemade food gift, purchase sweets from your favorite bakery, put together the makings for soup, or choose tea or coffee related items.  Small packages of cookies or any other sweets are good additions to fill in any empty spaces.

Tips:

The actual basket can be made of wicker, wire, or other materials.  If you are working within a specific budget, visit your local dollar type store for the basket as well as tea towels, cloth or heavy paper napkins, ribbon, shred, and other inexpensive items.

Choose the correct size basket to hold the food and other gift items you intend to use.

Line the basket with a terry towel, tea towel, napkin, purchased shred or other decorative paper.

If you choose to wrap your completed gift in a basket, place it in a cello bag (available in some dollar stores or party supply stores).  Gather the ends over the top and tie with narrow ribbon or raffia.  Curly ribbon cascading over the basket really looks nice.  Top it off with a gift tag.
